CWD and Devoucoux

"These beautiful, leathered works of art are tanned of the up most quality and sophistication."

We all know how important and necessary the right saddle is for rider and horses alike.  After all, the earliest evidence of the use of saddle dates back to 700 BC, where the Assyrian cavalry first employed the use of fringed clots and pads as a form of comfort for their riders. We have certainly come a long way from mere cloth!  So much so, that the two most renowned saddle makers – CWD and Devoucoux – have masterfully created the most luxurious saddles on the market.  These beautifully, leathered works of art are tanned of the up with the most quality and sophistication.  But we all know how much saddles cost!...Out of these two leading saddle makers, who has the better saddle? and are they are really worth the whole left in your bank account?!

Devoucoux

Let’s begin with Devoucoux.  This French company has designed over 3,000 unique saddles based solely on 13 basic models.  Not only are they a more recognized name thanks to the numerous competition sponsorships (including the $30,000 Otter Creek Grand Prix), but they are favored saddle of world-class riders and Olympian athletes. Devoucoux’s most popular saddle, the Chiberta, boasts that signature sense of balance you’ll find in many Franco-made seats.  Not only do they fit horses well, but they are also known to assist in keeping your legs in the perfect position.  Each saddle by Devoucoux is made from vegetal leather – special leather tanned with ingredients found in vegetable matter and tree bark for a harder, yet lighter finish.  Aesthetically, Devoucoux saddles offer a more “classic” look and feel that many riders find pleasing.   The Chiberta model will run you $2,250 to $4500 dollars.

CWD-2G

CWD’s most popular saddle, the 2gs, is a true symbol of luxury and performance.  If the Chiberta is the “classic” look, the 2gs is certainly its contemporary counterpart.  Ask anyone who has ever sat in a CWD, and they’ll tell you that they’re never going back. This seat is made of more than just leather.  It sports a carbon fiber Kevlar composite backbone and is purely designed to be both flexible and shock absorbent.  The saddle is also made to adapt to the horse’s morphology, and even has an added gel padding for rider comfort.

This beloved saddle will run you upwards of $5500 USD. While both saddles offer quality of the highest extent – and free test demos with custom fitting for you horse – clearly one is superior.  The CWD 2gs packs quite a punch in design and is certainly the best option on the market.  However, it also doesn’t put in any relief when it comes to your wallet, and that’s where Devoucoux has the upper hand.  Devoucoux offers the next best quality and design for much less in terms of price, and is perfect for those who favor a classical aesthetic (because let’s face it the 2gs does kind of look like a running shoe).  Therefore, the Devoucoux Chiberta is my personal pick.  Even if money weren’t an option, I’d still throw my hat in the Devoucoux ring.
